Personality:
Good-natured: Since Kit’s parents were both benevolent and loved one another, Kit has seen what a good marriage and good rulers look like. He strives to be like them in everything that he does, including marrying for love. He listens to all the wisdom his father has to impart to him in his role as prince and the future king. And while he doesn’t want to marry someone picked out for him because he’s already fallen for the mysterious Ella, he also wants his partner to be someone who actually cares for his people—someone who would assist him, not anger the nobles and commoners of the country. He’s willing to let his Captain of the Guard tease him when he’s doing things that are outside of his normal behavior, such as demanding to be called Kit, not paying attention during sword training, chasing after mysterious princesses at the ball, and fighting back against his uncle’s demands. Instead of being offended, he accepts these little remarks, smiles ruefully and attempts to go back to what is expected of him. At least for a little while.

Stubborn: However, because Kit is used to getting his way in a great deal of things, he does fight back against his father and uncle (the Grand Duke) when they try to “reason” with him to pick a bride from amongst the princesses. He’s already made up his mind and he wants to marry Ella, if he can find her again, and he’s willing to wear down both of them until they see things his way. It works with his father, who relents on his deathbed, but Kit’s aware that his uncle has other plans. So he barters with his uncle to find the girl and when he’s fairly certain that he’s being duped, he follows along in the party to the end, because he wants to make sure that his order as king is actually being followed.

Spoiled: As the only son of a very affectionate set of parents, Kit has never really been denied anything he’s wanted. While he’s been taught that he should be serving others, he still enjoys all the trappings of a pampered prince. When we first see him, he’s on the back of a horse during a hunt, chasing after a stag. It doesn’t even occur to him that this could be seen as anything but dangerous and cruel. It’s just what’s done, as he tells Ella when she calls him on it. As the prince, he’s used to getting what he wants, so he doesn’t think about any inconvenience his choice of bride might be for anyone else. Even though he appears to love his people, he still won’t marry politically and he does make more work for the guard captain unapologetically. He doesn’t appear to care that opening the ball to more guests will cost more money. He just wants the chance to meet his “pretty country girl” again and get to know her better.

Sheltered: Since he grew up in the castle, Kit actually is really naive to the plight of the commoners on a more intimate level. He understands that they don’t live the same way he does, but he is surprised when he meets Ella and she doesn’t say that her family treats her well. And while he does finally convince his father to open the ball up to the commoners as well, it doesn’t really strike him that they might not be able to afford to attend a fancy ball. He also doesn’t seem to realize that the Grand Duke might have other reasons for him marrying a princess, other than he is a prince and it’s what’s done, or that his uncle might be using him to shore up his power base. And while he knows that he’s handsome and powerful as a prince, he finds it a bit refreshing that Ella doesn’t recognize him, which is why he tries so badly to make it so that his attempt to hide his true position isn’t ruined by the Captain of the guard, despite the awkwardness of the whole situation.
